Build the engine by cutting and gluing together all parts to the chassis. Most of the components are made of wood, but some pieces require metal parts. The connecting rods are attached to the wheels with brass pins.
The drive rods and connecting rods are cut from 1/4 inch wide brass pieces. The piston is constructed from a 3/32 inch diameter, 2 1/4 inch long brass rod with a hook at one end.

Creating all parts for the arm from the same spindle rotation ensures that all arm sections will be of uniform dimensions and the joint at the elbow will fit precisely.
A soft timber like basswood is suitable for turning the main sections of the project, while ash is suitable for crafting the crank and jaw. Wrists are crafted by using birch dowels.
You can create multiple nutcrackers and give each one a unique persona by painting their faces, helmets, and hair in different colors.
